When the sun starts rising early, it's a sign that heartworm and flea
and tick season is right around the corner. The sooner you get to
one of our clinics, the better for your pet. We can let you know
if a blood test is needed, and get you started on your way. Any
pets six months of age or older need to be protected from little bugs
that can turn into big problems.
Also, puppy and kitten season is here. Get your little ones in
for a check up as soon as you can. We can give you tips on
housebreaking, diet and vaccines. We also have puppy/kitten kits
with some great products and information. Along with all that, we
can give you the best advice so far as spaying or neutering your
pets. Puppies should start vaccines at six weeks of age, and
kittens at eight weeks. Puppies have a series of shots every three
weeks for four rounds, and then receive their rabies vaccines at twelve
weeks. Kittens generally receive three rounds of vaccines, and
then receive their rabies vaccine at the end of the last round.
This is especially important for the licensing of animals. Please check
your county for what their licensing requirements are.
As the weather warms up, we tend to take our pets with us on travel
and errands. Please make sure they have a strong air supply and
are able to keep cool. For tips on traveling for extended periods
of time, please speak to us at your next checkup.
For animals that stay outside a great amount of the time, be sure to
provide shelter from the sun in addition to clean food and water.
Also, check their ears and face for fly bites.
Remember, it only takes one mosquito to turn the chance of heartworm
disease into an expensive and uncomfortable reality.
